White Jews: An Intersectional Approach (Vortrag findet in englischer Sprache statt)

What happens when one applies an intersectional frame to White Jews? By “White Jews” I
mean to speak of both those particular persons who are pale-skinned Jews proximately of
European descent, as well the general image of the Jew in the public imagination as having
such a background (overlooking Mizrahi, Ethiopian, Latino, and other Jewish groups). Only a
small portion of the intersectionality literature discusses Jews. But an intersectional approach
—asking “what does Whiteness do to Jewishness?”—can help illuminate elements of the
Jewish experience that would otherwise remain obscure. The core claim is that Whiteness
and Jewishness in combination function in ways that are not necessarily grasped if one
atomizes the identities and holds them apart. What Whiteness “does” to Jewishness is act as
an accelerant for certain forms of antisemitic marginalization, particularly those premised off
stereotypes of Jewish hyperpower. The White Jew image does this even as it ratifies a
racialized hierarchy within the Jewish community whereby authentic Jewishness is defined in
terms of Ashkenazi (European) heritage and practice. Intersectionality offers a new and
novel mode of understanding the White Jew as a constructed social body whose contours
significantly circumscribe our understanding of what qualifies as, and what matters about, a
Jewish issue.
